W. S. Merwin - Is anyone there

Poetry Chaikhana | W. S. Merwin - Is anyone there

When asked his name,,
YHWH said to Moses"
"I will be what I will be."
and when asked to show his face
God showed mooned him.

The "God of my understanding"
is, and probably will be,
a god of my non-understanding
and of my misconception.

Its "ways are not my ways."
the wise suggested,
nor its thoughts my thoughts.

When i trust now,
i will trust in emptiness and silenc
When i believe now,
i will believe in love
When i pray now,
i pray that i will not succumb
to any other force than the unknown.
