Grey Owl - Wikipedia

While his writings showed his deep knowledge and concern about the environment, Belaney's account of his origins as "Grey Owl" was fictional. The consequences of the revelation were dramatic. Publishers immediately ceased producing his books under the name "Grey Owl". In some cases his books were withdrawn from publication. This in turn affected the conservation causes with which Belaney had been associated, resulting in a decrease in donations to them.

Yea, thank you.
I think i do understand your point, though my post didn't reflect that. It was the larger society that was annoyed with him, not the people who accepted him.

There are three perspectives involved here. There is the person who claims to be or wishes to be part of a group; there is the group that accepts or rejects those claims or hopes, and there is the wider population and its peculiar definitions of reality. It is the person and the group whose perspectives should matter., but the larger world can have a powerful influence. Would Black Seminoles be rejected as fellow Seminoles if money were not involved and if they did not live in the midst of a racist society?
