Al Anon

My "outer purpose" for the past 15 years has been to help Dianne take care of herself and have some happiness in life.  I think i will return to the homeless shelter where i volunteered for two years before she got too diabled for me to want to leave for long enough to do a stint.  But I felt a need for my spiritual life to take some form beyond private meditation and blogging.  The chances of finding a Taoist community close seem dim, and i am still exploring the possibility of a Friends Meeting (There is one in  Meridian that does not call itself a church, so i am hopeful)  There is also a Buddhist community that uses the term "Zen." which is promising.  And, of course, there is always Al Anon)

It occurred to me a few hours ago to check out Al Anon meetings.  There was one tonight less than a half mile away.  So i went.  There were 15 people, including 4 men (counting me).  There seemed tp be a nice mix of "adult children." parents, and spouses of alcoholics.  I was, by far, the oldest person there though there appeared to be a man in his sixties and a woman in her seventies.  It was a comfortable place to be.  My hearing was pretty bad (audiologist appointment is Monday!) and the meeting was a  little too structured for my taste.  There was some good sharing.  I will "keep coming back."  This was my first meeting in 27 years.

Wonderful! I'm happy you're reaching out and finding community.

Thank you.

Actually, my autistically informed perspective on "reaching out" and "community" is rather strange. I don't resonate with either of those concepts, but i suppose they will be the consequence of
my actions.

I don't have a Taoist community near here. I have friends and it helps me/us to be involved with some the Buddhist people though.

Thank you.
Of course friends are the best.
and i will renew some friendships
and help establish new ones
and i will see what the local Buddhist communities are like.

I think it's great that you go out and look for like-minded people and communities that you feel welcomed, Bobby

Thank you, Mia
I wish there were a "12 steps for everybody who wants them" group.

Very cool. I look forward to hearing more about how it is for you this time around. I too have often wished for a 12-steps-for-everyone program.

I will try to keep you informed. <3
The closed thing i have found to a "universal" 12 step program is Emotions Anonymous. There are no meetings in Ada County (where there are 28 Al Anon meetings each week) There is a meeting in Nampa, which is only 12 miles away. I plan to attend next week. It is the only EA meeting in Idaho, and the only one i could find between Portland, Oregon and Salt Lake City
