Babette of Interlaken

Google Translate

Others have found Babette as elusive as i have.

Yes, there is a Babette of Interlaken in Hans Christian Anderson's The Snow Queen. but nothing i have read (it is a loooong story!) suggests that she might scare children, or that she could be "the Virgin Queen of Swiss Communism"

Sorry, the story is NOT The Snow Queen but The Ice Maiden which is even more remote a reference.
The Ice Maiden was written in 1871 much too late to influence someone who is supposed to be only a few years younger than Hans Christian Anderson.

At least the plot of The Snow Queen resonates with The Prague Cematary.  At the beginning of The Snow Queen, the "devil's mirror" which does not allow the image of anything good to be seen, is sharrered and pieces become wedged in the eyes and hearts of people all over the world.  Simonini acts like exactly the kind of person who would have shards of "devil's mirror' in his eyes and heart.  He can see nothing positive in any human person or action.  Only food can delight him.
