I don't know how you feel about Rohr's use of theories of spiritual levels but it always makes me itch! That is, I think he's at his worst when he writes that way.

I am starting to think more like you do.

I was lured into this "stages of faith" idea by Robert Fowler who build on Kohlberg, who built on Piaget, who built on Erickson, who build on Freud. I did not consider the weakness of the Freudian foundation or the intellectual leaps that must be made when comparing biology to cognition, cognition to morality, and morality to spirituality.

There is, i suppose, a certain descriptive value to these "tiers". although with nearly 112 percent of humanity in one slot or another it is difficult to find space for those who consider themselves outside that system.

In fairness to Rohr, he does admit that things are more complicated than this and that the scheme should be used for self analysis and not a basis for judging others.

Then there is mysticism, which does not easily fit into any of these tiers. Since mystics may arrive at that their peculiar perceptions of reality any time between ages 5 and 90, it is hard to see it as a stage of development. It is more of a gift. one i would welcome but cannot beg for.

Oh, but Rohr says that knowing about the stages makes us more compassionate [to those poor benighted souls who lack our enlightenment]!

Grrrr.

I am with you-- there are things one can say of one's own path that are revolting nonsense when said of definite or indefinite others.

Revolting nonsense, yes!!
And given a set of labels, it is hard not to apply them somewhere
