Dont 'kill Buddha'. Kill the temptation to focus on another's path -  no matter how beautiful they are as they walk it.

Oscar Wilde put it simply:
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

."...Since Zen meditators seek to be free to all emotion, thoughts, concepts, etc. the Buddha is but a "concept". Thus if you "see" the Buddha, make sure to get rid of him. Do not get attached to him. He's no different than a ghost, both a construct of your mind.
It should be noted that this saying is entirely within the Zen context. In other Buddhist schools (Pure Land for example), practitioners seek to "meet the Buddha".

"The story came from Zen Buddhist monk novices who were just so awed by "seeing Buddha images" when they meditated they just started breaking concentration.
Breaking concentration they would never advance.  So the teacher said, "If you see Buddha, kill him!"
Because the Buddha that you can see is not the real Buddha!  Buddha is knowledge and wisdom that comes through concentration not an image/idol.

Let's take a look at what the Buddha said about himself.
He asked a follower if the Buddha was found in body, feeling or the mind. This in reference to a question about the state of Buddha after death. The follower had to admit that he could not identify body, feeling or mind with the Buddha. Since it was already impossible to grasp the person in front of him, how much more difficult it would be to understand the state of the Buddha once he died, replied the Buddha....
...When we 'meet' the Buddha we meet a sense impression. Body, feeling or mind. When we identify one of those or the combination with the actual Buddha we make a mistake. As several others point out, we should first find the Buddha inside, not outside..."

"It  means that when one tries to attain spiritual enlightenment through  various practices, the practitioner may reach some stages of  enlightenment where he may feel "enlightened" like Buddha which may make  him / her give up further spiritual pursuit thinking that he / she has  attained all that is there to be spiritually attained. Hence this  violent appearing Zen statement goading the practitioner to be humble  always on the path to enlightenment."

Who am I?
Thanks for the post. As Tony Parsons says, we are no-thing (and everything).

I like it.

Short, koan-like, and with multiple possible interpretations.

"Kill the Buddha" it is an interesting conception and it shows very difference between the Christian relligions and the Buddhism. Although the Judas did the killing of Christ and the Christian had made all the relligion's concept based on this fact after.
I even see how in the ravaged by the USA muslim's Iraq or Afghanistan some fanatic will try to kill the Buddha if he will see his ghost, to take in account that they had tried to kill his statue some years ago when the sleeping Buddha had been found out or "woke up" from the sand seven days later as it was predicted. Or some gun admirer around the world will shoot at a ghost of Buddha after smoking so much weed but it is impossible to do of cause, I mean a killing not a try and many people around our planet regret that it is a turn of speech which had been made to enlighten people's minds...
I had asked you already what it is all about - the Buddhism way of enlightenment for you? What the purpose of it?

Well, according to most versions of Christianity, Jesus had to be killed to save us from our sins. What Judas did was evil, but "somebody had to do it."

I am not a Buddhist, but i try to follow the 8-fold path.
It it an excellent guide to a well lived life, specific enough to actually follow, (sort of like the Sermon on the Mount -- but easier to separate from the dogma). We are encouraged to follow the teaching, but not worship the teacher (which is a meaning of "If you see the Buddha...kill him." I do not want to kill the Buddha, i want to kill the urge within myself to worship the teacher instead of following the teaching.

Well, I am not going to blame them, they had wrote it all and if they had killed he was a man who had told that he is the God or something radical like that, and they don't believe that he was something more than a Prophet now. Who care...
Your thought that somebody had to do it which I had heard already is just wonderful, it looks to me like nowadays news. There is so much meaning in everything and everything is a total bullshit...

I will read what it is "8 fold path", I just don't remember a phrase in English to understand what is the Buddhism to you..
