Richard Rohr's Meditation--Myths

http://myemail.constantcontact.com/Richard-Rohr-s-Meditation--Myths.html?soid=1103098668616&aid=iZOppQR4rZc

Another provocative "meditation" from Father Rohr.

The Abrahamic religions are called "historical religions" which seems to me that they not only emerged duriong historical time, but their own stories are "factual" and have the status of empirically established events.  Jewish and Christian (and i suppose, Muslim) archeologists are forever trying to dig up evidence that the events described in their scriptures were events in time and space rather than in human imagination or heartfelt desire.

In Christianity, for example, we are to take the Virgin Birth of Jesus, his bodily resurrection, and his coming again as events that did or will occur in  historic time.  Is one to be eternally damned because she has looked for evidence of these events and found  it lacking?

For a long time i treated the story of Adam and Eve as a children's tale because i could not accept it as anywhere near accurate on the basis of what i knew about archeology and anthropology.  In fact, it seemed to be a about the most counterfactual story anyone could have made it.  It never occurred to me to look at it as a myth.  So, while i have enjoyed and learned from the myths of many tribal cultures, those of the tribe of Judah were ignored.

But taken as myth, i can appreciate its richness and learn and invent many lessons from it.

I have known several Native Americans who were capable of being good representatives of  their tribal cultures and competent theorists in the field of anthropology.  I have always felt a sense of betraying my culture and society because i have tried to look at them objectively.  lnsertion of the idea of myth could be a way of bringing events and feelings about those events  to a more  level playing field.
