Copyright Infringment

I have been advised bu the estate of poet and novelist Nancy Wood that posting her poetry in my journal was a violation of law.
I have reluctantly deleted her poetry from my journal.

That anyone paid enough attention to Livejournal to even NOTICE, is what amazes me.

See, if you'd done like Leonardo da Vinci and written everything backward, I doubt very much that anyone would ever have spotted it.

Or you could have put in binary notation

but who knows what kind of money-business detectors that would set off in today's America, which retains only the name.

Besides the two options above, making the entry Friends-only is another way to handle it. It's not ideal but it's safer, and at least the material gets out there, even though the audience is limited.

Thank you. I have never used the "friends only" option. But i have used the "private" option (i thought) and later learned that others may have read me.

That is incredible.
Good grief...this is one of the reasons I only post friends only. I don't need people trolling my journal which is personal anyway.

Thank you, Donna. I usually don't mind who reads my stuff. Because of autism, i can get pretty unclear about boundaries so i try to be careful. I had probably better learn something about copyright and intellectual property law. :)

I have encountered this before and been surprised, since you are actually promoting the work of the person you quote. It is "free' advertising. It is short-sightedness on the part of the estate. I would think the poet would be thrilled to have her work read.

Well, i didn't ask permission. I quoted whole poems. And i unCapitalized some letters because i thought that made the sense of the poem clearer. Also, the warning came from someone with the surname "Wood," and families can sometimes get real strange over intellectual property rights.

Yes, it's true that families rush to protect. Yes!

I just checked out the Nancy Wood Literary Trust. They are very clear on protecting her work. I think it is a good thing. I just ordered on of her books, so it all makes sense, and cents. :-)

Thank you.

This would be weird and meaningless in 1975.  [But then, much of today's cultural banter would be. The other day I read that one strategy open to the entrepreneur owner of a small business is to go to the cloud.  Written as so, no quotes or anything.  It sounds rather mystical, like going to see the Maharishi.]

:) Mystical, i like; mystigoguery i don't like.

Very peculiar, especially here in LJ. I'm sorry that you've had to deal with such a hassle.

When I think about it I can sort-of see how it might technically been an issue though. Publicly posting material online is technically publishing, and I have been told that copyright holders cannot knowingly allow some violations of copyright to exist without nullifying their standing to be able to pursue large-scale, money-generating violations. They may not care about you posting the material to LJ, but they have to address it so they don't lose the ability to sue the next garage "press" that decides to market a "new edition" of her works and keep all the proceeds for themselves.

Regardless, I support the already mentioned idea of just friends-locking posts with lengthy quotations of material still under copyright.

I may be able to post some of favorites among Wood's offeerings under conditions that are reasonable, actually quite gernerous.
