Ah, thank you!

For more than the explication of the poem-scrap!

I knew that you meant by "the ego," "the self." Somehow, I hadn't grasped that you meant the self of that small shabby theatre of tawdry stories and clutched, well-defended rags. And in a desire to be rid of that, I'm with you. Nasty, toothy little thing.

The idea of the disguises still seems pretty curious to me. Perhaps, though, it might be an infelicitous word (to me as reader, at least) for a fluid capacity for empathy....
