The shooter had no criminal record, he is male, and he lives in the United State.

Sure he was "troubled," i am troubled, most people i know are troubled either because they are American mates or have to associate with them.  He might even be mentally ill; but none of us who have not been released as cured cannot be certain that we are  not mentally ill.  The pawn shop salesperson in Alabama had no reason to know that he had been denied a permit to own a gun; that was years ago, in another county.

Yes, it had been alleged that he had committed arson and domestic violence, but, hey.  some things need burning and some relatives need to be "disciplined."  Besides that, an allegation is not formal charge, and certainly not a conviction.  We are held to be innocent until proven guilty.  Someone may be able to prove him guilty now.  But at the time he purchased the weapon he was just another free American male, deserving of his rights, chief of which (according to some) is the right to own a gun.

"The answer to a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun."  But, until last Thursday, John Hauser was a "good man with a gun."  He became "a bad man with a gun" only as he opened fire on movie goers.  Who can say when and where the next "good man with a gun" will turn out to have been a "bad man with a gun."

I have many friends and relatives who own guns, some of them love guns.  I do not fear them.  To learn that they had turned to violence would both shock and surprise me.  Your gun owning friends and relatives?  Well, i do not know them.  I only know that the rate of Gun violence in the United States is very high.  When Trump went to the Mexican border, he was stastically safer than in his home city.

When I hear about "common sense"* gun regulations keeping guns from "unstable people," I always think that surely that should mean all USians, given our fixation on ability to own guns that have no fruitful use outside target ranges.

* I hate that term. It finesses such grand silly claims.

Yes!! Target practice and the "need" to protect ourselves from each other.
