In the school of mind you
learn a lot, and become
a true scholar for many to look up to.
In the school of Love, you become
a child to learn again.

-- from Nobody, Son of Nobody: Poems of Shaikh Abu-Saeed Abil-Kheir, Translated by Vraje Abramian

Poetry Chaikhana | Abu-Said Abil-Kheir - In the school of mind

When i began to feel an interest in poetry. the second website i looked at was poetry-chaikhana, and since i knew almost nothing about "sacred" poetry, started to read alphabetically through the 336 poets listed (who had about 3400 poems among them on this site).  The third poet i encountered was Abu-Saeed Abil Kheir.  At first, i found him uninteresting. annoying.  Annihilation of the self can seem pretty drastic when the self is the only thing you think you have, and referrences to fire were too reminiscent  of hell.  To be annihilated by flames seemed a punishment for the damned, not a gift of grace.  I went on to read other poets many of whom i came to love.

Then i read: "Love is the fire that burns both belief and non-belief." (from Piousness and the Path of Love).  I was hooked!!  There are translations of 23 of his poems at this site.  Ten are among my favorites and the number continues to grow.
