Marriage - An Anthropological Definition

A marriage is a societal relationship including a woman and at least one other person, such that, any child born within the rules of that relationship has a legitimate place within the society that sanctions the relationship.  The problem with this definition is that it was formulated before surrogancy, in vitro fertilization and other fertility enhancing proceedures were practical.  But that's the problem with any definition: it was formulated in the past, and now is now.  Only that which is already dead can be well-defined.  When something is enshrined in law i can consider that law to be the official obituary of the thing in question.  The law kills.  This is why folkways and mores and the golden rule require respect.  Disrespect for cultural and common sense rules force the uptight to make laws and give power to their enforcers.

I like it. Marriage really needs to be redefined. What do we call it when two people (maybe no women) get together and have no children at all? Is there a folk tradition for that?
