HERE BEGINNETH THE SEVENTEENTH CHAPTER

That a Very contemplative list not meddle him with active life, nor of anything that is done or spoken about him, nor yet to answer to his blamers in excusing of himself.
                                               ..............................................................
.
"Lo! friend, all these works, these words, and these gestures, that were shewed betwixt our Lord and these two sisters, be set in ensample of all actives and all contemplatives that have been since in Holy Church, and shall be to the day of doom. For by Mary is understood all contemplatives; for they should conform their living after hers. And by Martha, actives on the same manner; and for the same reason in likeness."

Cloud of Unknowing - Christian Classics Ethereal Library

So let me get this straight --
Contemplation can occur in a nanosecond.(Chapter 4)
Contemplation should be a lifetime commitment leaving no room for an active life.

There are three levels to the spiritual life (Chapter 1)
These seem to corresspond to three combinations  of activity and contemplation. (Chapter 8)
Poor Martha represents the lowest level of the active life.
Her sister Mary represents the highest level of the contemplative life.
Whe represents the middle level, where activity and contemplation merge.

One of my friends calls himself an active mystic.
Father Rohr's mission is called a Center for Action and Contemplation.
Would that ALMOST everyone could be a contemplative activist!

I understand that there are people called to contemplation and that their service to the rest of us is invaluable.

I know that involvement in politics and economics (and even education, religion and family) raises holy hell with my ability to be compassionate, gentle, non-judgmental, forgiving, loving, humble or other characteristics of the mystic.

I think it must be a matter of priorities;  First, prayer,  Second, contemplation. Third, meditation, Fourth, thought, Fifth, preparation, Sixth, action;  At any rate, contemplation and activity should be in the proper order.

When you are right with Tao, you may do nothing, yet nothing  is  left undone.
