Answer for question 4158.

There's a lot of nostalgia around old franchises coming back right now. Movies, TV shows, even action figures! What's something from your childhood that you wish would come back? Why?

(This question will remain in place for a few days while Writer's Block is re-launched -- we'll have new questions each weekday starting on Monday!)
Pickup Games in middle class neighborhoods.

I was never enough of an athlete to participate in organized sports, especially team sports. But i was able to spend my preteen and teen years in the 1940s playing football, baseball, and basketball because the games erupted spontaneously whenever a few kids got together. No adults were
present at these events -- we either knew the rules or made them up and enforced them ourselves or played without rules. Not enough kids for two teams? We started the games anyway and hoped others would join. They usually did. Very few of us were obese. We played hard and those of us with little skill tried to make up for it by playing harder.

Sheeyun (born 1970) and I (born 1960) are both rather startled at how rare neighbourhood play is. Though we are parental perps. Chun Woo's activities prevent his playing with the kids on our cul-de-sac, who get more street play time and like him. (He and we like them, too, though one of them has me careful about putting away the sharper garden tools.)

I regret that i said "middle class" in my post. I assumed that pickup games are alive and well in urban and lower class neighborhoods. But i notice that the players portrayed on TV are all males, and all adults.
