Writer's Block: War and peace

Many countries require all citizens to fulfill a mandatory period of service in the armed forces. Do you agree or disagree with this policy? Do you think the current recruitment system creates or sustains socioeconomic inequality?

1) I disagree; 2) yes I do, it does create and sustain inequalities.  I am pleased that the pay of officers is relatively modest compared to pay of other corporate executives but that is small comfort when the military, while purporting to preserve our democracy, does what it can to to produce a mentality which is not compatible with democratic life.  The argument is made that the military cannot function as a democracy, but the same argument is made for almost every other area of life is well.  So where does an American acquire the skills of citizenship, not in the family, not in most schools, not in most churches, not in most jobs, and certainly not in the military.

1. Only the children of people who advocate for war ought to be required to serve in the military, on the front lines, and not as officers.

2. Yes.

Why not the people themselves--spare the children who may not always share the views of their parents.

You're right, of course. But the hawks in Congress are usually too old to fight, the army won't take them. But they don't want their kids getting killed, either.

We can change the draft age to 46 to 90.(:>D)
we would argue that the lives of younger people have too much potential to to be risked in war. A1 would be wealthy hawks in political or corporate office, with no medical exemptions and any of their wives who chose to "stand by their man." If "those who own the country" rule it, they should be the one's to fight for it as well.
