Kenneth Burke's Definition of "Man."

His definition of humanity states that "man" is "the symbol using, making, and mis-using animal, inventor of the negative, separated from his natural condition by instruments of his own making, goaded by the spirit of hierarchy, and rotten with perfection.

burke seems to have a rather fallen view of humanity, kind of like that of a ultra conservative from a theological perspective. maybe he is half right.

I take this definition partly in seriousness and partly in fun, like the definition of man as a "featherless, wingless biped." I see the definition as one which makes most sense to me when i compare myself with my fellow non-human creatures (like my dog). It also reminds me of tendencies which i share with other humans such as taking myself too seriously.
