Venus of Berekhat Ram

Venus of Berekhat Ram

This "pebble" which seems to have been altered by hominid hands, probably by homo erectus, but possibly by Neanderthal  "man" or by Homo S. Sapiens.

National Geographic (January, 2015) accepts this as art and dates it a +/- 265,000 years ago.

While this could be a "pebble," or the markings on it could be meaningless. a consensus seems to be emerging that is "human" (Homo) or human (homo sapiens) art.  As a rule, we find, as we dig deeper, farther, longer,  that things are older than we thought they were.  During my adult hood the date of the oldest homo s. sapiens has shifted from 70,000 years ago to 130,000 years ago.  I have no reason to believe that that date will not be pushed back another hundred thousand or three hundred thousand years or more.

We've been around a long time, and it seems to me short sighted to think only in terms of the last fitteen thousand years, let alone the last five hundred, or the last twenty.
