Trivia

During the American Revolution, an American colonel named Tate led 1400 French soldiers ashore in Wales near a small town (Fishgate?)  The local women wore red shawls and tricornered hats.  From a distance they were mistaken for soldiers.  Seeing themselves clearly outnumbered, the invaders surrendered without firing a shot.  (From Realm, magazine, January 1997).  This was the last time that foreign troops, uninvited, set foot on Britain.

Trivia (My Bad)

Re: Trivia
!) The site of the invasion was Fishguard
2) The year of the "invasion" was 1797.  Therefore it was some "Directorate"  adventure.
(What an elderly and probably senile Irish-American Colonel was doing in charge i have no idea).

Anyway, here is variant. but more detailed version of the story:
Historic UK - the history of Wales - the last invasion of Britain by the French at Fishguard
