During the American Revolution, an American colonel named Tate led 1400 French soldiers ashore in Wales near a small town (Fishgate?)  The local women wore red shawls and tricornered hats.  From a distance they were mistaken for soldiers.  Seeing themselves clearly outnumbered, the invaders surrendered without firing a shot.  (From Realm, magazine, January 1997).  This was the last time that foreign troops, uninvited, set foot on Britain.
