The transition from youth to adulthood can be smooth or incredibly difficult. What is the most important lesson you learned since middle school, and how has it guided you?
"Since middle school?" They didn't have middle school when I want to school, people went from eighth grade either into adult life or into high school. Eighth grade for me was sixty-three years ago. My most important lesson was to learn to forgive myself for my mistakes. I will not reveal how long it took me to learn this.
An old Zen master was asked to give his biography. He said: My life has been one mistake after another. Well, that's true for a lot of us. I had to learn whatever lesson the mistake taught, pay what ever penalty it cost, forgive myself, and move on to the next mistake.
