Tao Te Ching, Chapter 75 - Cost and Value

Why are the people starving?
Because the rulers eat up the money in taxes.
Therefore the people are starving.

Why are the people rebellious?
Because the rulers interfere too much.
Therefore they are rebellious.

Why do the people think so little of death?
Because the rulers demand too much of life.
Therefore the people take death lightly.

Having little to live on, one knows better than to value life too much.
Daily Tao - November 27th, 2009

Legend has Buddha giving up great wealth and power
for a life of poverty and homelessness
Even his "middle way" was propertylessness
with a little less starvation and nakedness,

Luke has Jesus beatifying the poor
and cursing the rich.
and having no place to rest his head.

And a true shaman never thinks
to rise above the people that he serves
by taking more than his share
of the community's meager wealth,

Spirituality both is and is not about materiality.
We are warned against having treasure
elsewhere than in heaven.
and against knowing the cost of everything
and the value of nothing.

But then again, maybe i need to know the value
of Nothing.
and to find the value of this chapter
hidden in its final line.

Here's a little story i want you to know:
A burglar in a palace overheard a king
say he wanted his daughter to marry a monk
so that she could know a life of beauty and spirituality.
The burglar thought: " Why should i steal a few jewels
when i could have a whole kingdom."
So he went down to the river
where the monks meditated
and started to imitate them,
pretending to be one of them
so that when the king's men
came to get a monk for his daughter
he might be picked.

As the king;s agents came to each monk
and stated the king's request.,
each monk said,"i cannot marry the princess,
because i am a follower of the Way",
As the burglar heard each reply,
he began to change.  "If the Way is so great
maybe i should follow it also."
When the king's agent came to him, the burglar said"
"i cannot marry the princess,
i am a follower of the Way,"

Whatever is valued will be stolen
If money is valued, money will be stolen
If love is valued, love will be stolen.
But when love is stolen, there will be more of it,
not less..  If you try to steal love from me,
i will find that i have even more of it
to give away.

Let me not worry about the political
and economic interpretations of this chapter,
and think about the spiritual application of it.
Let my treasure be where it should be
and let my heart follow.  Amen
