Do you believe that violence in media promotes violence in real life? Does media reflect cultural values or can it actively reshape them?
Violent media* is both effect and cause of a violent society. a violence oriented culture, and most individual violent behavior.
We human beings, along with other primates are capable of violence, but, in our natural state, are not inclined toward it.
The problem is, most of us are no where near our natural state, and media (literary and electronic) is cause and consequence of
our separation from nature. Violence is particularly part and parcel of contemporary Western society, and we would deal better
with it if we acknowledged that fact instead of worrying about "sub cultures of violence," or "terrorists" or other specific threats.
That is like worrying about a paper cut while floating in an ocean of blood.
*Perhaps not only violent media but all television, video games, books, etc. are implicated. As McCluen argued: "The media IS the message."
