Stephen Levine - Trust Your Vision

Trust Your Vision

by Stephen Levine

Original Language English

Trust your vision
     make it whole
     hold it like the Navajo
     his solemn desert oracle
     in quest of shaman passage
     gaining his healing chant
     guiding him through life.

Hold the vision
     constantly rising
it is the way nature works
     through you
it is the only self
     an everchanging underdream
a vision (if you see it)
     up to you
to make real.

Act on your vision
and pray that you are blessed.

-- from Breaking the Drought: Visions of Grace, by Stephen Levine

Poetry Chaikhana | Stephen Levine - Trust Your Vision

An exaggerated impulse toward action is a modern perversion which causes us to see other cultures and societies as too inactive.

During the past eitht months, i have "suffered" from an extremely low energy level.  There are many daus when i am barely (and sometimes less than barely) able to take care of my minimal needs and few responsibilites.  I spend a lot of time beating myself up over this.  But i notice that neither the universe nor my tiny part if is seems any worse off because of my  lack of participation.  An arguement could be made that the sum of well intentioned human actity has made this planet less habitable

I love Levine's poem, but it does at least a small injustice to Navajo culture.  While Natove Americans insost that they are not as passive as Asians, they also see Europeans as overly active and aggressive.

The purpose of having a vision is to have it.  It is not necessary to act on it.
