Contemplation

I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought:
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.

Four Quartets - 2 East Coker . Part III.  T. S. Eliot

Waiting without thought defines contemplation  for me.
If the hope, faith. and love are in the waiting:
perhaps the thinking is there also?

with apogies to Paut. more than three "abide.."  Faith is the "holy idea" of the "Loyalist; hope. of the "Achiever;" and Love, of the "Peacemaker." *     Other types of people may value other ends: perfection, freedom, law, will, origin, omniscience, transparency, wisdom, foresight, or truth.

John  of the Cross  asked pre-contemplatives to consider their state in relationship to the seven deadly sins, to which somebody (the Jesuits?) has added two: fear and deceit.

So i will try to contimplate without viciousness    and    with virtue
                                         without anger             and   with serenity
                                         without pride              and   with humility
without deceit            and   with authenticity and truthfulness
                                         without envy              and   with equanimity
                                         without avarice          and   with non-attachment
                                         without fear               and   with courage
                                         without gluttony        and   with siobriety
without lust              and   with innocence **

* This sentence and most of what follows is drawn from a wickipedia article on enneagrams.

** sloth and action are ignored here as thir relevence to action are more problematic.  Certainly sloth is to be exchewed; but many mystics (in my opinion, the wusest) would deny that action is necessarily a goal of contemplation

So I'm taking it that you find the enneagram system appealing?

I, on the other hand, am going, "Ah, Father Rohr's recycling the enneagrams. *sigh*" The more so because what he was doing just before is, for me, The Meat of the Matter. A Meat, anyway.
