Detached You are, even from your being,
and this being is nothing but You.
Unmanifest, yet the manifest is naught
but Your shadow.

Moons, galaxies and worlds drunk from this cup.
And the cupbearer is nowhere to be seen!

-- from Nobody, Son of Nobody: Poems of Shaikh Abu-Saeed Abil-Kheir, Translated by Vraje Abramian
Poetry Chaikhana | Abu-Said Abil-Kheir - Detached You are, even from your being

Sometimes i forget how wise the wise are and i marvel that poems by this poet were written one thousand years ago.  Of course, i am assuming a fair translation, but how did the poet know that their are multiple galaxies when we had barely penetrated our own and most people believed that God sat on a throne a few miles over our heads.  Do we really have any idea about what the ancients knew or thought they knew about the universe.  When i look at the pictures from Hubble, i sometimes see monstters struggling to create or destroy the universe.  The ancients could not have seen these images, yet their stories fit the picture.

But does any of this matter?  God is, was, and will be beyond our comprehension.  The Divine was, is, and will always be within us.  We will never enough to understand; we have always known enough to  love.

Why all the poems lately by Abu-Sayeed Abil Kheir?  I am having  a real writer's block and this poet (yes, he is one of my favorites) has been the only force able to push that block aside.for a moment.
