World Needs Love, I Need To Love.

The real problem of our existence lies in the fact that we ought to love one another, but do not.

Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) American theologian and clergyman

I just read a quote from C.S. Lewis suggesting that we can love our enemies while killing them.  Worst of all, he cites Jesus as his authority.  When we fail to meet a standard, we can either change our selves or change the standard.  Since changing oneself is often assumed to be difficult, we most often change the standard.  Followers of Jesus started out as a community--the "kindom of God" but ended up as a religion, because a continually loving community is assumed to be very difficult to maintain. while a religion can be maintained by belief, ritual, superstition,  and hierarchal organization.

It is fine  to try  to make our religions practical for the sorts of flawed societies we have to live  in, but when we do this at the expense of the basic principles of that religion, when (in the case at issue). we turn the teachings of Jesus completely upside down, isn't it dishonest of us to even pretend that we are following that religion?

Wouldn't you think that the mass of goodwill supposedly intended by the vast majority of humans would be enough to overcome the influence of a few power hungry sociopaths?
But the sociopaths seem to have the upper hand.  The rest of us are too busy being "practical."

I think that amnesia about our original impulses and the teachings that initially motivated us also serves our transformation of Beloved Community into Jesus Clubhouse. :/
