Babette of Interlaken

I could find no referrence outside the novel.  Was she really a 19th century boogy-woman devised to frighten potential republicans back into the arms of Church and Monarchy?  Or is she Eco's invention?
Is there any reference to her outside Eco's novel?.   She is mentioned in this review but i know no French and the English translation is  so confusing that i get no help here.  Has anybody heard of her??

I've never heard of her, and the French review could be referring to her either as a character or as a historical personage, but if you can find no other reference to her I'd go with the former. I read this one, but it was not one of my favorites of Eco's and nothing of it has stuck in my memory. Disappointing (to me), for the author of The Name of the Rose and Baudolino.
